Manarolo -- Cinque Terre

The steep slopes require advanced techniques for maintenance.  When we got off the train we were greeted by this helicopter delivering materials for erosion control.
the chain link fencing that cascades down the hillside keeps the train tracks clear of rubble while the taller cable fence holds back the larger boulders that occasionally find there way off the cliffs.

Artists have found this town to be a source of creativity.

Main street when viewed from station platform.

Main street from near the harbor.

Because the steep walls of the harbor do not allow normal launching the fishermen and tourists use this crane to put their craft in the water.
Once launched the only way to safely navigate to the sea is by rowing.
a reason the people from this area can wear skinny jeans is their access to homes and businesses is limited to walking up and down the terraced paths.

Manarolo fills one of the valleys along the coast. As you can see the harbor accommodates only smaller boats and probably requires a skilled sailor to get into and out of dock.
Manarolo houses wrap around the cliffs that form its harbor.
Afternoon lighting accents the village colors

With trekking poles at the ready we are ready to tackle Corniglia seen in the distance
