Riomaggiore is perhaps my personal favorite. The access to the village and harbor are via tunnels and the compact nature of the town accents the steep road and walkways.
Another short train station platform means you need to be alert when traveling to this village. |
The train station has this large mural honoring the men and women who labored to build the terraces, harvest the grapes and till the soil of this area. |
The long tunnel from the train station to the village and harbor is decorated with mosaics and painted tiles. |
Just a small portion of the mosaic decorations inside the tunnel that leads to the village.. |
Main street |
The church at the top of the hill. |
interior of this church reflects the black and white motif just as the others in the area. |
Narrow access stairs are very common in all the villages |
clothing hangs outside a small merchant and makes for a colorful photo. |
I do not know, nor want to know, what is behind these doors. |
with the small narrow winding streets emergency vehicles must be small. |
Local vegetables are displayed for purchase. |
Packages of seasoning mixes and spices were plentiful. |
view from the church courtyard looking toward the sea. |
view from church courtyard looking away from sea and up the Riomaggiore valley. |
After a short walk through a tunnel the harbor area is a welcoming area. |
Rental boats ready and waiting for the summer crowds |
perhaps my favorite picture of this small village area. taken from the breakwater seen below. |
Breakwater of Riomaggiore. the water is crystal clear as seen here. |
